Alimento industrializado eleva risco de depressão, mostra estudo
Pessoas que ingerem grandes quantidades de alimentos industrializados têm 58% mais chance de sofrer de depressão em comparação com as que mantêm uma dieta rica em peixes, vegetais e frutas. A constatação é de um estudo publicado no periódico “British Journal of Psychiatry”.
Dados sobre a dieta de 3.500 participantes com 55 anos de idade, em média, foram divididos em dois grupos, segundo o tipo de alimento que eles costumavam ingerir. O grupo dos que consumiam mais comida processada –como sobremesas adoçadas, fritura, grãos refinados e produtos lácteos com alto teor de gordura– mostrou-se mais vulnerável à depressão em um perÃodo de acompanhamento de cinco anos.
Ainda não está claro por que alguns tipos de comida podem proteger contra a doença ou aumentar a chance de uma pessoa desenvolver o problema, mas cientistas acreditam que pode haver uma relação com inflamação, assim como ocorre com doenças cardÃacas. Os cientistas fizeram ajustes para gênero, idade, nÃvel educacional e de atividade fÃsica, tabagismo e doenças crônicas e, depois disso, a dieta mostrou-se um fator importante para a depressão.
Segundo o psiquiatra Renério Fráguas, coordenador da residência médica do Instituto de Psiquiatria da USP, sabe-se que um aporte insuficiente de vitamina B12, folato e ômega 3 deixa a pessoa mais vulnerável ao transtorno depressivo. Ele pondera, no entanto, que é difÃcil saber se a organização pessoal, o hábito de sono e o nÃvel de estresse, por exemplo, interferem no risco de depressão e, consequentemente, nos resultados da pesquisa. “Pode ser que as pessoas que comem mais processados tenham uma vida mais estressante, o que pode aumentar o risco de ter a doença”, afirma. “Isso relativiza os achados.”
